A Guide to Chair 23 Mammoth

Mammoth Mountain is the most popular ski resort in California, hosting 50,000+ skiers a day. This means that on weekends and holidays, it can also offer an extensive program of events for families and groups.

The ski area is spread out horizontally and has a range of terrain for all abilities. With 25% of the mountain rated for beginners, this makes it a great place to learn the sport. Beginner skiers and snowboarders will find the best terrain in the Canyon Lodge and Eagle Lodge base areas where there are dedicated learning areas and fun runs for progression.

There are a lot of fun runs in the Backside area of Mammoth that offer more advanced terrain. These runs are more challenging, but they’re also a great option for a day of fun with friends and family.

While some may argue that Squaw Valley’s KT-22 or Whistler Blackcomb’s Peak Chair are the best chairlifts in North America, Mammoth Mountain’s Chair 23 is probably one of the top lifts in the world. Originally built to take advantage of a natural snowfall in the region, Chair 23 was designed as an extreme lift that would not only get skiers to the Summit of the mountain quickly, but also give them access to the most steep and challenging terrain on Mammoth Mountain.

It’s a great ride, and it offers some of the most thrilling skiing in the world. But what makes it so special is the engineering that went into its construction.

A high altitude chairlift that goes over rocks and ends inside a futuristic housing is an amazing feat of engineering that few skiers can truly appreciate until they’ve experienced it themselves. It’s a ride that has stood the test of time and continues to deliver incredible thrills decades later.

Mammoth is a big mountain and it’s not easy to ski there on a windy day, but if the weather cooperates, it’s always worth a visit in the Spring and Summer when Mammoth can be accessed with ease. It’s a good idea to check the snow report online before heading to Mammoth, especially if you’re planning to ski on a windy day.

To get to Mammoth, you can fly from a variety of major cities in California and Nevada, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Reno. United Airlines flies year-round from Los Angeles to Mammoth Yosemite Airport, and you can also choose seasonal non-stop flights from San Francisco, Oakland and Las Vegas via SkyWest Airlines.

When the weather is skeezy, the upper part of the mountain will be shut down, but the lower slopes are usually open. The good news is that Mammoth is located in a snowstorm corridor, which typically sees plenty of snow.

Mammoth’s snowfall is usually very consistent, averaging 400 inches of snow a season. This is not an uncommon amount of snow for the mountain, and it allows Mammoth to keep skiing through July 4th weekend every year.
